About The Better Birth Advocacy Network
Our Mission
The Better Birth Advocacy Network was born one night through a conversation about what our community is lacking. With a deep passion for helping, three women created a plan to start serving their immediate community and a drive to reach further ones. A vision of a new wave of educated informed birthing people empowered to advocate and birth in their own way was born. Founded in Central Alberta, Better Birth Advocacy Network's mission is to provide birthing people, partners, and professionals with the things they need throughout their pre-conception (TTC), pregnancy, childhood, and parenthood journeys.
The BBAN is dedicated to supporting individuals of all faiths, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and gender identities. In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge that we reside, work and learn on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 2 + 3), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 6 and Treaty 7 region of Central Alberta.
Our Why
According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, pregnancy and childbirth are the number one reasons for hospital admission in Canada. It is because of this that makes it so critical that birthing people, partners/support people and professionals have adequate access to thorough and connected support throughout their pre-conception to parenthood years.
Having navigated the birth system and climate before, both professionally and personally, we understand how difficult it can be to find quality, inclusive and accessible resources to make the decisions that matter most.
We want EVERY birthing person to feel like they have a voice to advocate what is best for them, to feel supported and be authentically heard. We want EVERY partner/support person to feel like they matter, and that they are well equipped to support. We want EVERY birth professional to be trauma-informed, inclusive and open to genuine conversations surrounding Pregnancy, Birth and Postpartum decisions. Not just Alberta wide, but worldwide.
